Yes, they are rather limited in their cichlid selection. Octopus's Garden is a good place to try for rare fish species. They'll special-order stuff, too. Slightly off-topic, but something I've noticed (and admired) about Albany Aquarium is that they rarely sell tankbusters. In fact, they have that one huge, precariously-placed tank on the raised level with pacus and giant koi (I think that's what they are) and all sorts of other beastly fish, and I believe all of them were "abandoned" - ones people bought as babies elsewhere, misled into thinking that they were already at full size when they were purchased, OR pets that people didn't want to take with them on a move. It's a good display to show people what can happen when you don't do your research, first. Another thing I admire is that they don't sell "painted" or "dyed" fish or hybrid frankenfish like balloon mollies and parrots. Any time I see them, it makes me want to shake the owner and say, "Listen - you're making yourself look pretty weak in the eyes of SERIOUS hobbyists by stocking these pathetic things..."
It's been a big improvement since they set up the new holding tank for the plants with CO2 injection and good lighting. Now at least most of the plants actually make it well into the second week... Before, most of the stuff was dead by the end of the first week, if not sooner. I stopped in on Friday or Saturday and I noticed the plants actually pearling! Twelve or thirteen days in the store and they're pearling! Not all of the plants, though, but many of them. Or maybe somebody spilled some Champagne in there ;-p... JK. Geez, well, I'll close volume two of "Deep Thoughts - by Naomi" for now... ;-p (I agree, it's nice to see some activity here, again. Thanks for sparking off some "non-controversy", Michael!) ;-) -Naomi |
