You can't clean them...except to do what you did.   You want them to work as a biological filter, but as they clog up with schmutz, they become mechanical filters. Your best bet is to really stir up the gravel occasionally, and vacuum off the deitritus. Michael Laflamme   Since we're talking about filters...I used to run a UGF in a 10 gallon...how the heck do you clean it?
