Thx. do not why cheaper AquaClears can do expensive Fluval canister
job. Maybe canister has other "secrets" advantages we do not appreciate.
Still think expensive canister should have its reason to be more
expensive than Aquaclears. I currently have a Pengium 125 for a 29 Gal
tank, it is ok.

I have and use both the Fluval canister filters as well as the aquaclears. They both are good filters. The canister can be quieter than the aqua clears, the aqua clear is great for using filter floss, I can change it several times a day or week in a quick manner that does not require breaking open the canister.
Sometimes to stretch out servicing on the canisters I will put a sponge on the intake hose, it catches most of the tank crud, and lets the canister perform biological filtration. Just ring out the sponge on the intake periodically. You can probably do the same on any intake to a filter. I used to do that on my biowheel filters as they would clog filter cart in a couple weeks, this way I could get a lot more out of the filter cart and still have the action of the biowheel.
I guess what I am getting at with this is don't be afraid to tinker with your filters, you may get more out of them by customizing them.
