I second the Fluval for a cheap canister.

If you aren't attached to the canister concept, consider AquaClears. I use
two AC 300's on my 100 gal "big catfish" tank. The tank is over crowded
with three adult feather fin synodontis, one adult and two half
grown synodonitis decorus, one 13-14 inch gibiceps (sailfin) plec and four
3-4 inch clown loaches. It all cranks along very well, and has for five
years, with a weekly 20-30 water change and the AquaClears. I like them
because they are easy to clean, easy to find parts for, cheap to buy,
cheap to run and provide a large media box area where you can put any old
non-custom media you want in.

The AC 500 might be better for the fish you list.

Just a thought.

My next pick would be a Fluval. They have essentially gone unchanged for
over a decade. If you can find an older one from craigs list or from the
auction at the SFAS, you won't be dissapointed. I would suggest a Fluval
403 for what you need. If you buy a newer one, I bellieve the number
changed to 404.
