Hi William,

You should know that this is normal behavior for Neo. pulcher and related cichlids when they are being rejected from the brood after they become large enough to look like a threat to the dominant pair (even if it happens to be their parents). The dominant fish chase them toward the top, and sometimes the only way to go is "out"!

Look for any fish hovering near the top of the tank--these are the "rejects", and if you don't put them in a separate tank in a timely manner, you're going to see more fish jerky on the floor, I'm afraid. To a certain extent you might be able to mitigate these jump-outs if you provide lots of hiding places where these rejected fish can duck out (I have a thick cluster of watersprite almost covering the entire surface of a 10-gal that sort of serves this purpose, believe it or not!)

Is there an easy way to cover the back inch and a half of an aquarium
without removing the HOT Penguin filter? I ask because I found an F1
generation Neolamprologus pulcher "daffodil" jerky stick on the floor
today...

William
