The Singapore shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) are detritivores and filter feeders; not really significant consumers of algae but neat critters all the same. You'll see them near filter outlets with their appendages open (http://toshir0.tripod.com/living_85gal.htm - 2nd pic from bottom), and when they get particularly hungry, using their modified appendages to sift thru debris at the substrate level. I've kept these over the years and they're lots of fun, provided they have enough to eat. They are quite bright in color immediately following a molt, and get pretty beefy, a few inches in size as Doug mentions. That place is freakin' expensive! Justin, at Ocean Aquarium in SF, usually sells the Amano shrimp for either $1.50 or $2. He also has the smaller and prettier bumble bee shrimp and tiger shrimp that I believe both sell for $2.50 although if algae eating is the main intention I would stick with the Amano's. He also often has the Singapore shrimp that is cherry red (which may be what was mentioned by Michael) but this is a much bigger shrimp, about 2.5 - 3" and I don't know if it eats algae or just waits for excess fish food. ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael Laflamme To: detr-@topica.com Sent: Monday, January 27, 2003 7:53 PM Subject: Re: lots of Amano shrimp Scott, Did you try Albany? I hear that Guy also has some new type of nice little shrimp there as well. Tom knows about it, and the APD had a few posts on it. I think they are cherry in color...something like that...someone help me out here...
