Apistos are a lot hardier than people think. In the past, they were shipped
under such bad conditions to the USA, the many deaths gave them a bad rap.
I've cleaned up many a tank an found one remaining fish in a tank that was
almost dry (5 gallon breeding tanks). In the current Tropical Fish Hobbyist
(Jan 2002) article named "Small Window" by Gary Elson, Gary received a
nearly frozen box of fish from Peru and managed to revive some A. Juruensis
and A. Agassizii.
I've been looking for Borellii and Trifasciata because they can withstand my
tap water (7.5 ph medium hard) and they can be kept at room temperature (my
place is usually in the mid 70's).

you're not trying to breed them.
I've been eyeing those A. borelli at a couple of
shops recently... If they're really that
hardy, they might be worth a try someday...

One thing I've noted is that we keep most of our dwarf cichlids within
"recommended" parameters and are unaware of what they're capable of
withstanding.
I saw an article recently that stated A Borellii had the furthest south
