William, When I move tanks, I like to think of it sort of like carrying a box. I grip the two lower edges and carry it against my stomach. Yesterday I had to lift a 30g tank off the top row of a rack and placed a hand up against the bottom of the tank. I was nervous...I had visions of the glass giving way and my hand going up into the tank (the mind is a terrible thing to let run loose, let alone waste)...of course I've never had that happen but the bottom of the tank is not designed for smaller points of pressure. I don't rely on the frames to hold during a lift from the top. The frame is glued on with silicone cement...even new ones can pop off from time to time. Different sized tanks are made with varying thicknesses of glass on the sides and bottom...the 10 "All Glass" tanks are the same on all surfaces...I saw some back east by another manufacturer that were thicker on the bottom. To some degree I think you have to use common sense when picking up tanks...and the old ones especially. Glass gets old like humans and sort of wears out. My opinions of course.
