Re: SFAS (was Re: hello? is anyone there/here?)  Broken Tiger

Hy-ummm, this had a familiar ring. I think this is where I came in two
years ago, the ppl who ended up going off to start the SFBAAPS trying to
figure out how to get themselves and the SFAS off their respective
backsides and solve some problems. As I recall, the whole issue fell
away when the concerned and active ppl went off and started the plant
club.

At that time, I had no interest in plants (yes, some things do change)
and only a minor interest in the SFAS (some things stay the same) and
did not follow the active members on to the next world.

Personally, I would very much like to see this list more active and a
bit broader based. Last time it was active, I dutifully read every post,
but had little to say because few if any of the posts had anything to do
with me as a fish keeper. Most of the posts concerned local politics,
esp the SFAS, or getting things done, and I am more interested in fish,
aquaria and plants than I am in the history of the local club or in who
said what about whom or why this or that is or is not getting done. This
close association between the list and the clubs is of course quite
alienating when one has no idea who those ppl are and when one has not
felt comfortable enough at the SFAS meetings, in part because of the
same in crowd tone of those meetings, to find out who these ppl were.
And, speaking for myself. I am sure that it does not help that the one
time I did introduce myself to someone I had run in on this list that I
was greeted with less than day in and day out ordinary manners--forget
courtesy, enthusiasm or "hail fellow, well met."

It would be nice to have this list run as a topic, more or less, list,
where those who are in clubs and those who are not in clubs can "get
together" to promote the hobby and make friends without history that has
nothing to do with many of us getting in the way or dominating the list.

And I have been wanting to say that for two years.

I think one reason the list died has been over looked by older and
regular members: it is not a friendly list for new ppl and has little
to do with aquaria per se. A specific list for the on-line SFAS is a
fine idea, but ppl joining need to know it is a club list. Many BA
aquarists are on other, national and international lists, but don't know
about this list; or, if they tried it, they had the same experience I
did and never said much.

(not sure whose post is where on this enclosure--I tried)

This one seems to have died because it was peopled mostly by members or
friends of SFAS who were either disgruntled, unable or unwilling to do
any actual work. {snip}

It would be nice if we could turn that around, and ease SFAS into the loop
on some Bay Area tasks that are currently not getting done. <<<<

The Pres. (Schelly Numrich) seems willing and eager. All we need to do is
get off our backsides and go do the work. Maybe I should attend another
meeting, for a change? ;-)

Delighted to hear you are going to move the stalled web site ahead. It could
be a wonderful resource, with a master bay area calendar of fishy events,
up-to-date club contacts, etc. I think it has suffered from outside
information sources not knowing exactly how to utilize it, as much as
internal problems (like never posting programs before the meeting or
location/date changes). Go for it!
