There are a lot of specialized lists devoted to local Bay Area Aquatic concerns. I'm aware of a killy (BAKA) and a Betta (CBS) list, as well as the SFBAAPS (Aquatic Plants) list. There's probably a cichid list or two, plus some conservation-oriented ones. This one seems to have died because it was peopled mostly by members or friends of SFAS who were either disgruntled, unable or unwilling to do any actual work. It's not surprising that it was a bit on the dull side and finally drifted into total disuse. :-) It would be nice if we could turn that around, and ease SFAS into the loop on some Bay Area tasks that are currently not getting done. I perceive that there are quite a lot of Rainbow (plus Blue-Eye) folks in the area, and also a great many breeders of livebearers. Neither group has shown any true signs of getting organized on their own. Is there some way SFAS could help them get there? Both have or had national organizations, but there's nothing like face-to-face meetings every month or two to get the fish, eggs, and information really flowing. I vaguely recall the discus group starting by meeting, as a "study group," before the regular SFAS meetings until they had enough going to do it on their own. Did that ever happen? IDK. [They probably joined with the angelfish types to wipe the pond scum (Apistos) out of PCCA. ;-)] BTW, I'm all fresh or brackish water, with a hundred or so mostly small tanks going. My main activity is in killies, but I sometimes do dwarf Cories, Blue-Eyes, Rainbows, and more unusual livebearers. I used to do both regular and wild-species Bettas, but I'm not working with them, much, any more. I'm tinkering with the design of improved hoods for planted tanks, and some other stuff related to my background as an EE, mostly working in optics.
