Come on Gay, how about no light or no fish too?
But seriously. I believe brown algae gets a chance when there are nutrients
for it to live on. These nutrients are nitrogenous waste caused by the
fish. This paired with the light gives it a chance. Personally in my
hatchery I don't mind it because in my opinion the algae on the sides of the
glass is the equivalent of one sponge filter in the battle against poor
water quality. Most hatcheries don't wipe it at all. I only wipe the front
glass and the bottom. I believe fry sit on the bottom and adults' ventral
fins touch the bottom when feeding so keeping it cleaner means less chance
of bacteria on your fish.
Otherwise it is just ugly. But it is helpful.
Your water might have some phosphates in it or even nitrates. You are in a
farm community and runoff could cause this stuff.
