Thats a good question Nick. I always thought it was a type of mulm, you
know
from plant and fish waste. I pulled out the Webster this morning after
reading
your post. Heres the definition of Detritus.

1. Rock in small particles or other material worn or broken away from a
mass, as
by the action of water or glacial ice.
2. Any disintegrated material; debris.

I need to clean my tank this weekend I do have plenty of "detritus"
Which brings me to my next point, My new style fluval 204, the package
said 180
gallon an hour, I figured plenty circulation for a 29 tall. Well if that
thing
is pumping 50 gallons an hour I would be shocked! I'm very disappointed
in it.
I beleive it's a good part of the detritus problem I have going on. I'm
trying
to talk my wife into buying a tank for her classroom so I can give it to
her and
buy myself something better. Any suggestions for a good canister style
filter
 out there?

I think detritus is just fine. My vote is to keep it as it is.
I also would like to see some/more/any discussion regarding aquatic
plants.

I concur that detritus is a good name.

Plant discussions abound, but they are usually either on the local
SFBAAPS

list or the world-wide Aquatic Plants Digest, sorta leaving this list
for

 "all other topics." ;-)
